The Uvita area is one of the best places in the world for birding, as over 350 species of birds have been identified within a fifteen minute drive of us. To put this number in perspective, this is about 40% of all the species of birds which can be identified in all of the United States! According to the Audubon Society, there are more than 850 different species of birds in all of the United States. In all of Costa Rica, (an area roughly the size of West Virginia), there are 921 species of birds! This number is more than have been recorded in all of the United States and Canada combined. The bottom line, if you are a birder PurUvita needs to be on your bucket list.
In addition to all the amazing birds, we also have a great variety of amphibians, reptiles, mammals and insects like the elusive blue morpho butterfly, not to mention a plethora of tropical fish species, dolphins and whales just three minutes away at Marino Ballena National Park. Marino Ballena is one of the best places in the world for seeing humpback whales in the wild, as we have pods that travel north from Antarctica during one time of the year and pods that travel south from Alaska and California during another time of the year. September and October are the best months for seeing lots of whales, but they can also be seen throughout most of the year.
A few of the notable animals we have seen right here on the PurUvita property include: Chestnut-Mandibled Toucan, Fiery-Billed Aracari, Collared Aracari, Mantled Howler Monkey, White Faced Capuchin Monkey, Blue Morpho Butterfly, Collared Peccary, Grison, Northern Tamandua (Anteater), Agouti, Jaguaroundi, Bajuila, Tolomuco (Tayra), Scarlet Macaw, Tropical Red-Tailed Squirrel, Orange-Chinned Parakeet, Crimson-Fronted Parakeet, Red-Lored Parrot, Broad-Winged Hawk, Hook-Billed Kite, Slaty-Tailed Trogon, Great Kiskadee, Ring-Tailed Coatimundi, Green Basilisk Lizard (Jesus Lizard), Green Iguana, Collared Forest Falcon, Lineated Woodpecker, Dendrobatidae Poison Dart Frog and many species of hummingbirds. This is only a partial list. Scroll down for a slideshow of a few of the notable animals that we have personally photographed in the area.
